Earthquakes & Hurricanes. Are not the signs to look for

Earthquakes & Hurricanes & Volcanoes.

And now, Earthquakes & Hurricanes & Volcanoes have been replaced by the coronavirus. Earthquakes & Hurricanes usually get a lot of attention. Prophecy-minded people flock to such news items.

But, though earthquakes & hurricanes will literally move mountains and change the landscape in their paths, they are not the key signs that the Bible points toward.

Updated post:

The coronavirus has become the latest “prophetic event” that is causing Bible prognosticators to declare the end is now. For real this time. Are they finally right this time?

The hurricanes are coming, but what about the volcanoes and meteorites? The United States has re-entered the hurricane season while many around the world are taking note of the increased volcanic activity. Are these significant signs of biblical prophecy or just the normal rumblings of an active planet?

Above-average hurricane season expected for 2018

This article was first written during the terrible hurricane season last year, 2017. When terrible things happen, it’s common for people to turn to their Bibles looking for answers and hope.

Others look for proof the world is in its final death throes.

But is that true? On this site, there are no predictions about the immediate end of the world after each earthquake or volcano. There are specific signs the Lord told us to look for.

Still looking for this to happen.

A temple will be built.

Sacrifices will start again.

Jews will flow back to the nation

Jealousy against them will surge internationally.

Ten nations will rise up and attack them.

Other nations will turn their back on Israel.

Desecration of the newly built temple will take place. (the abomination of desolation)

The Antichrist will be revealed.

Many will turn from faith in Christ

Worldwide persecution against Jews, Christians, and infidels will increase from bad to horrific.

Another holocaust begins

These volcanoes are just birth pangs. The birth of real trouble is still a ways off.

Acts 2:19

I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.

Luke 21:25

“There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.”

Hurricane Harvey Devastated the land

but strengthened the people

The hurricanes were lining up, one after another in 2017. Storms were backed up from the Gulf of Mexico and far out into the Atlantic Ocean. They waited their turn to ravage through homes, towns, islands, and countries.

After hurricanes, Harvey and Irma left mass devastation in their wake, the casualty count and cleanup began. The final cost of heartbreak lives and property was beyond knowing. Irma came after Harvey and barrelled through the Caribbean and headed toward the United States. It left Puerto Rico a darkened and twisted mess after the storm swept over. Electricity was out for many months in the majority of the state. Florida braced for landfall but was luckier than their southern neighbors. Around the same time, an enormous earthquake struck Mexico. The news about Irma drowned out, no pun intended the terrible news about the earthquake. Though overlooked for a few days, the news in Mexico started to come out. The loss of life and structure was enormous.

Earthquakes & hurricanes and the true Signs

When all this was happening, the world seemed to be undergoing a great assault from mother nature. Funny, I don’t believe in mother nature but she gets blamed often when these things occur.

Were all these signs and calamities the same ones Jesus spoke about two thousand years ago? Are many bible prognosticators correct? Jesus did give warnings about earthquakes, heavenly signs, and calamity. Are these the signs he spoke of?

Luke 21:11 Earthquakes & hurricanes and much more

And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

This verse is one of many we can look at. Let’s ask some simple questions regarding his predictions. Jesus combined several things in this verse.

  • Great earthquakes: What makes an earthquake great? How big should it be? Great quakes in history
  • Diverse places: Does that mean many great quakes around the world? Maybe.
  • Famines: We have famine in the world now. We’ve had great famines in the past. Terrible famines
  • Pestilences: How bad will this be? The Spanish flu of 1918 killed 20 to 40 million people. (here)
  • Fearful sights and great signs: What is this? Signs from heaven. Is this just an eclipse? It sounds like something much more ominous than an eclipse. Heavenly signs

Is the sky falling–again?

Bible prophecy teachers often look like “the sky is falling” fanatics when they point to every bad event and say, “This is it!”

When Jesus first spoke these warnings, Jerusalem was still the center of Jewish worship. The temple stood proudly overlooking the City of David and the Muslims were not even a twinkle in the eye of Mohammed’s ancestors.

Things changed quickly. A rebellion of Jewish patriots led to the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem. Many Jews were killed, captured, or dispersed. Things have changed a lot in recent history, but we are still waiting for the signs Jesus spoke about.

Not Yet

Faithful Bible students should avoid pointing to every earthquake and hurricane as a direct judgment from God. Two thousand years of history should make it clear to everyone that bad things happen to young and old, men and women, religious, and non-religious. The signs Jesus spoke about are still in the future. If I or anyone else knew when we could make a killing in the book business. Nobody knows when but I am fairly certain the next series of earthquakes & hurricanes will not be the specific signs Jesus spoke of.

You will know then

The combination of signs will begin to hit and build to a devastating crescendo. When the ‘great quakes’ hit, no one will have to ask, “Is this a great quake?” Everyone will know. When the fearful signs in heaven appear, no one will have to ask, “Is this the great sign?” Everyone will know.

So, in the meantime. Pray for those hit by these troubles and do what you can to help.

These are not the signs you are looking for. There are others.
