Jesus answered 3 questions of the end of the age: Matt. 24

Three questions for Jesus

The disciples of Jesus had three important questions for Jesus on the night before he was crucified.

Matthew 24:3

“As He sat upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples came unto Him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?”

  1. When will these things happen?
  2. What will be the sign of your coming?
  3. What will be the sign of the end of the world?

The close friends of Jesus, his most loyal disciples, had three questions for him. Jesus answered those questions.

He answered the questions!

These three questions and the answers Jesus gave have been debated, argued, and fought over for the last two centuries. Jesus gave the answers but how many of us don’t have any idea what He said or what He was referring to? Lost in the debate is the fact that Jesus gave some answers to the burning questions bible students have toiled over ever since he left this earth.

Jesus gave us the answers. We would be wise to pay special attention to them. Read the passage, ask for direction and understanding, read it again, sit in silence and listen…read it again. That’s a good start to understanding what Jesus said.

The commentaries can wait.

Leave the commentaries and the online debates among scholars for another time. Let the Holy Spirit teach you what Jesus said.

I remember a solo backpacking trip up through Little Yosemite Valley many years ago. I set out to hike up the familiar path to Half Dome, ascend the backside, and enjoy the stunning view. As the trail veered left away from the Merced river I changed course and decided to take a new path. Instead of trekking up the familiar trail toward Half Dome, I decided to continue up the river and see what new sights I had been missing.

I was not disappointed. Some of the most peaceful and beautiful scenery was my reward for taking a new path. The river was beautiful. It was powerful, dangerous, peaceful, and serene, all at the same time. I parked myself on a large granite boulder and dangled my feet over the river and enjoyed a quiet conversation with the Lord.

Just like the disciples, I was able to sit down and have a talk with Jesus. That should be our starting point when we are looking for answers in the Bible.

Talk to the Lord. Give Him your questions.

So what’s the answer to the questions?

The sign or was it many signs?

The wars, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes are not the signs we should be looking for. Jesus said these are just the beginning of trouble.

“These are the beginning of sorrows.”

The signs of the end are these.

“And this Gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations, and then shall the end come.”

When you, therefore, shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place…”

“For as the lightning comes out of the east and shines even to the west, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be.” Like lightning blasting across the sky from east to west.

And then shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven.”

The debate will continue about their meaning but Jesus gave us answers.

If you could ask the Lord three questions about the end of the world, what would you ask?
